Allan Gray Makers’ Fusion Fest 2026 brought about 150 people together in Gauteng from 3 to 5 September to find practical ways to strengthen South Africa’s artisan economy.
The initiative aims to help artisans turn their skills into sustainable businesses that can support livelihoods and create employment.
The three day event focused on improving access to funding, markets, training and business support, while encouraging more young people to consider trades and entrepreneurship.
It also featured the Artisans of Mzansi business competition and the launch of Find A Maker, which connects customers with verified artisans.

Mpumalanga tackles literacy one book at a time

The Mpumalanga Education Department is using reading programmes to build a stronger culture of reading among learners across the province.
The initiative includes reading activities, classroom libraries, graded readers and teacher training to help children develop stronger reading and comprehension skills.
The department is also working with partners to take reading beyond the classroom, with programmes such as the Book Hive Reading Club encouraging learners to make reading part of their everyday lives.

Thriston Lawrence makes golf history in Switzerland

South African golfer Thriston Lawrence has made history after winning the Omega European Masters in Switzerland.
Lawrence produced an incredible comeback, firing an eight under 62 in the final round after starting the day six shots behind.
He then beat England’s Paul Casey in a four hole play off to claim his third title at the tournament.
Lawrence becomes only the second player to win the event three times in its Swiss setting, joining Spanish golf legend Seve Ballesteros.

EMT praised for lifesaving mountain rescue

An emergency medical technician in North Carolina is being praised for his lifesaving effort to help an injured climber.
Will Soper covered about 2.4 kilometres and climbed roughly 305 metres in elevation in just 31 minutes to deliver blood to Jacob Gregory, who was suffering from severe internal bleeding.
Gregory had fallen about 6 metres at Shortoff Mountain, and more than 20 agencies joined the rescue effort.
Soper and the other rescuers are being credited with helping save Gregory's life.
