R10 Billion Boost for Early Childhood Development
Story 2
Government has pledged R10 billion for early childhood development support and introduced free storybook initiatives to promote reading at home.
Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube says these efforts will strengthen the foundations laid in preschool years.
The 2024 Thrive by Five Index assessed more than 5 000 children across 1 388 early learning programmes. It found only 42 percent of children are on track, with wide gaps between well-resourced and underfunded centres.
Officials believe the new investment, along with better nutrition, quality teaching and access to resources, will give every child the chance to thrive.
