TUT Students Win Two Awards At African Mars Rover Challenge

Tshwane University of Technology engineering students have won two awards at the 2026 Cars4Mars African Rover Challenge, held at the South African National Space Agency’s facility in Hartebeesthoek, Gauteng.
Team Wall-E won Best Traversal Mission for navigating difficult terrain, while RoboTechAura took Best AI Mission for using artificial intelligence and computer vision to identify objects autonomously.
The competition brought together around 120 students and learners from South Africa, Kenya and Zimbabwe, challenging teams to build rovers capable of tackling simulated Martian conditions.

The project is expected to create approximately 6,500 permanent jobs and attract investment into the region.

UP Trains Small Scale Farmers To Protect Livestock

The University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Veterinary Science hosted a Farmers’ Day at its Onderstepoort campus to help small scale farmers improve livestock care.
The Production Animal Mobile Clinic team demonstrated animal treatment techniques and shared advice on vaccination, quarantine, disinfection and biosecurity.
Farmers also received guidance on recognising health risks and working with state veterinarians to protect their animals.
