Gqeberha Pupils Turn Plastic Into Sports Gear

Cape Recife High School in Gqeberha has won the 2026 Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition with an invention that turns plastic bottles into material for 3D-printed sports equipment.
The learners developed a device that recycles used bottles into material for making sports gear, helping to reduce plastic waste and lower equipment costs.
The team won R100,000 for the school’s science and technology equipment, and each learner received a smartphone.
Grade 10 learner Kukhanya Mbebe says the team wanted to find a practical way to tackle plastic waste while making sports equipment more accessible.

SPARK Schools has launched the Khanya Centre of Excellence at its Rivonia campus in Johannesburg to strengthen teaching and school leadership.
The centre, launched earlier this week, will help educators improve their classroom skills through practical training, coaching and feedback.
It will also train school leaders to better support teachers and help them respond to the different learning needs of pupils.
The goal is to improve the quality of teaching and give learners a better classroom experience.

DUT Students Win GovTech AI Hackathon

A team of Durban University of Technology students has taken top honours at the GovTech Hackathon with an AI tool designed to make official statistics easier for the public to find.
Called Rafiki, the assistant allows people to ask questions and get answers based on verified Statistics South Africa data, either through a website or WhatsApp.
It also checks its information and avoids giving answers when the required data is not available.
The team received a trophy and certificate for their innovation, with the win potentially opening doors to further work with Stats SA and professional experience in technology development.
