Lake Muskegon Restored After Decades of Pollution
Story 3
Lake Muskegon in Michigan has been officially removed from the Great Lakes’ list of polluted water bodies after more than 40 years of restoration efforts.

Decades of cleanup, costing $84 million (about R1.44 billion), removed 145 000 cubic metres of contaminated sediment and 100 000 tonnes of sawmill debris, restoring the lake and its tributaries.

The lake is now a hub for parks, festivals, fishing, cruise docks, and tourism, attracting around 400 000 visitors a year and boosting property values by $7.4 million (around R127 million).
