UCT Student Develops Low Cost Home Using Soil and Recycled Waste

A Master's student at the University of Cape Town has developed a sustainable way to build homes using natural soil mixed with recycled plastic and glass.
Chemical engineering student Matimba Mabonda recently built a three bedroom house in Ennerdale using the method as part of his research.
He says the technique can reduce building costs by up to 40 percent compared with traditional brick walls
Matimba hopes to extend the housing solution to more people.*

Learners Enjoy Animated African Folktales

Grade Two learners at Moses Kotane Primary School watched Izinganekwane Zika Gogo: Pekwa no Nogwaja, an animated film bringing traditional African folktales to life.
Organised by Cheers To The Leaders with the Gauteng Film Commission and the City of Johannesburg, the screening showed stories once told by grandmothers in modern 2D animation, teaching lessons about forgiveness, responsibility, and learning from mistakes.
Each learner received a Screening Handbook with reflection exercises and a writing challenge.
Teachers said the children were engaged, enjoyed the film, and actively participated.

Wife and Technology Save Skier in Washington Avalanche

A skier at Stevens Pass Ski Resort in Washington survived an avalanche thanks to his wife, Penny Harris, who used the “Find My iPhone” app to guide rescuers to him.
Michael Harris was buried under snow in the Big Chief Bowl area but remained conscious. Penny noticed his phone wasn’t moving, alerted ski patrol, and showed them its location, allowing rescuers to dig him out safely.
Harris sustained injuries but is now recovering.
