Johannesburg Shines in Global Family-Friendly City Rankings

Johannesburg has been named the top South African city in a new global study ranking the world’s best places to raise a family in 2026, placing 41st overall.
Cape Town and Durban also made the international top 50, at 46th and 49th respectively.
The study by Compare the Market AU looked at factors like safety, education investment, green spaces, and family activities. Johannesburg families benefit from over 120 children’s activities, access to parks, museums, and science centres, and quick getaways to natural wonders like the Blyde River Canyon, Panorama Route, or Kruger National Park

A Master's student at the University of Cape Town has developed a sustainable way to build homes using natural soil mixed with recycled plastic and glass.
Chemical engineering student Matimba Mabonda recently built a three bedroom house in Ennerdale using the method as part of his research.
He says the technique can reduce building costs by up to 40 percent compared with traditional brick walls

Cape Town Robotics Team Wins Sixth National Title, Heads to World Championships

The Cape Town-based robotics team Texpand has won the South African National Championship for the sixth consecutive year and will represent the country at the World of First Tech Challenge in Houston, Texas.
Team members, including Matthew Greenwood and co-captain Ben Anderson, also earned individual honours, with Greenwood receiving the 1st Place Inspire Award and Anderson named a Dean’s List Finalist. Texpand has supported robotics education across South Africa, helping launch 17 new teams, providing 1,000+ hours of free technical training, and creating a shared equipment library.
Ignite Robotics teams from Khayelitsha and Thandokhulo High also impressed, outperforming veteran teams in their first national season.
