Eastern Cape Pensioner Becomes Debt-Free After Public Support
Story 2
An Eastern Cape pensioner, Arnold Sodinga, has had the outstanding balance on his home loan written off after his story gained widespread public attention.
Sodinga believed he had been steadily paying off a loan taken out in 2008, but discovered he still owed more than R55,000 despite years of repayments. The case was highlighted by musician Jules Harding and consumer journalist Wendy Knowler, prompting thousands of South Africans to share the story.
Following public attention and an investigation by the Ombud, Standard Bank wrote off the remaining debt.
The decision means Sodinga can now retire in his home without the burden of the outstanding loan.

The space now produces fresh vegetables, herbs and fruit used for meals and food parcels, helping improve food security in the area. Community members say the project has also restored dignity by cleaning up an environment that was previously unsafe and unhealthy.
Run by local volunteers, the centre also provides nutrition education and creates small economic opportunities through surplus produce.
