Tshwane’s Recycling Pilot at Fountains Valley Shows Promising Results
Story 1
A new separation-at-source recycling pilot at Tshwane’s Fountains Valley Resort is proving successful.
Since February, visitors have been using 12 colour-coded recycling bins to sort aluminium, plastic, paper and glass right where they dispose of waste.
This public-private partnership between the City of Tshwane and Petco aims to change recycling habits and reduce landfill waste.
The clean separation of recyclables also helps waste pickers by providing better quality materials for sale.
Notably, the bins themselves are made from recycled materials, diverting hundreds of thousands of cartons from landfill.
City officials plan to expand the project to other public spaces, hoping to create cleaner communities and strengthen the local recycling economy.

San Francisco Partnership Turns Reclaimed Wood into Hope for Formerly Incarcerated
Story 3
In San Francisco, a unique partnership is turning reclaimed wood into more than just furniture.
A charity that leads design projects with incarcerated women teamed up with Formr, a local woodshop that hires formerly-incarcerated men and other marginalized individuals.
Together, they created a Japanese-style end table using traditional woodworking techniques and reclaimed materials from urban trees and demolished buildings.
The table’s design was developed by incarcerated women, and proceeds from sales support A New Way of Life, a charity helping formerly-incarcerated women successfully re-enter their communities.
This collaboration highlights how art and craftsmanship can provide new opportunities and hope, turning discarded materials and lives around in San Francisco.
