Cutting-Edge Jewellery Exhibition Opens in Pretoria

The Viewing Room Art Gallery in Brooklyn, Pretoria, is hosting Hardware/Softwear, an exciting exhibition showcasing contemporary jewellery created using advanced 3D printing techniques.
Featuring the work of Hesti Wade, a part-time lecturer at Tshwane University of Technology, the collection explores the blend of digital design and physical craftsmanship.
Wade uses Computer-Aided Design and Selective Laser Sintering nylon 3D printing to transform virtual concepts into tangible jewellery pieces that appear soft yet are structurally strong.
Inspired by organic materials and traditional crafts like lace and knitwork, the exhibition pushes boundaries in modern jewellery design and additive manufacturing.
Hardware/Softwear runs until 29 July 2025 at The Viewing Room Art Gallery in the St Lorient Building.
This innovative show highlights how technology is shaping the future of jewellery, blending art, science, and tradition beautifully.

Brave Netter Prevents Tragedy During Sardine Run
Story 2
Amanzimtoti’s Kioshan Govender is being praised for his heroic actions during sardine netting at Winkelspruit Beach.
As a powerful current pulled the net, a heavy rope began whipping dangerously across the sand, heading straight towards adults and children who had gathered too close.
Despite warnings from the crew, many beachgoers ignored safety advice in their rush to collect fallen sardines.
Kioshan rushed to anchor the rope to a van to stop it from injuring anyone, but it snapped and wrapped around his leg, causing a serious injury.
Thanks to the quick action of his cousin, who cut the rope, Kioshan’s leg was saved.
He’s now recovering and preparing for surgery, and says he’d do it all again to protect others.
His courage and selflessness have been widely applauded, showing the true spirit of community and care on our beaches.

Affordable Solar Power Bricks Light Up Underserved Communities
Story 3
A new solar power innovation from Wits University and partner Mbono is transforming energy access in underserved areas.
Peco Power’s modular “Power Brick” system offers affordable, scalable energy that grows with household needs.
These durable 12-volt lithium-ion bricks, ranging from 30W to 200W, are solar-ready and can be stacked to increase power.
An add-on inverter converts power for local voltage requirements.
The Rent-to-Own Champion Franchise Model makes the system accessible and affordable over 12 to 36 months.
In Mpumalanga’s Nomzamo community, the Power Brick helps a local childcare centre refrigerate food and power educational devices.
Wits students and staff played a key role in developing this impactful solution, showing how university innovation can brighten lives and futures.
