Community initiative in Manenberg
Story 2
Manenberg mothers Valerie Oliphant and Najoemah Felix are preparing to host an early Christmas lunch for 300 children on December 16, aiming to give youngsters a sense of love and belonging during the festive season.
The event will offer a full meal, snacks, drinks, ice cream and party packets, with music to create a festive atmosphere.
It follows other community projects the pair have run this year, including a Youth Day pamper party for 100 children and a Women’s Day lunch for 150 elderly mothers.
They say the initiative is driven by the needs they see in the community.

The World Bank reports that Bangladesh has lifted around 34 million people out of poverty between 2010 and 2022.
Extreme poverty fell from 12.2% to 5.6%, and moderate poverty dropped from 37.1% to 18.7%.
This achievement reflects the impact of social assistance programmes and other measures aimed at improving living standards. Experts say further policy innovation could help Bangladesh continue this positive trend in reducing poverty.
