Western Cape expands conservation estate by 47 000 hectares
Story 2
The Western Cape has added around 47 000 hectares to its conservation estate through two new nature reserves and expansions of Anysberg and Knersvlakte reserves.
The new reserves are Waterkloof near Ladismith and Zebraskop in the Gamkaberg area.
The expansion provides breeding grounds for Cape mountain zebras and protects threatened plants, mammals, and bird species.
WWF South Africa and other partners supported the project. Officials say the additions strengthen ecological connections, safeguard multiple vegetation types, and support ongoing management of the region’s wildlife.
