UJ wins global award for virtual reality teaching programme

The University of Johannesburg has won a 2025 international award for its virtual reality teaching programme.
The Learning Analytics embedded Virtual Reality Classroom helps trainee teachers practise and improve their skills using simulations and real time feedback.
The award was announced at a global education conference in Mexico City.
UJ says the recognition reflects the University’s commitment to using technology to improve teaching and learning and to reach more students and educators across the continent and beyond.

Non-profit U-turn launches Feed5000 homeless people over Christmas

Non-profit organisation U-turn, which supports vulnerable and homeless people in Cape Town through programmes focused on food, shelter, and social reintegration, will provide daily meals during the Christmas break when other dining services close.
The Feed5000 campaign will run from December 15 to January 11 at 14a Roeland Street and will offer hot meals and support to hundreds of people each afternoon.
U-turn says the initiative helps address the increased hardship faced by those who rely on daily food services and offers a chance for connection and support during the holiday period.

Subway trips help New York shelter dogs find homes

A New York volunteer, Bryan Reisberg, takes shelter dogs on weekly subway outings to help them meet the public and showcase their personalities.
He carries the dogs in a backpack labelled “adopt me” and records videos of the trips to share on social media.
The videos have attracted millions of views and helped ten of the eleven dogs featured get adopted.
Shelter staff say the initiative has also encouraged interest in other shelter dogs, boosting overall adoption rates.
