New Learning Centre for Strandfontein Youth
The 9Miles Project is creating a permanent learning centre in Strandfontein, Cape Town.
The centre will offer children and at-risk youth a safe space for education, mentorship, digital learning and community activities. The centre has won the 2026 WAFX Award in the Power & Justice category and was also named a finalist in the World Architecture Festival’s Future Projects – Education category.The WAFX Award celebrates the world’s most forward-looking architectural concepts.

Marimba Magic in Cape Town
More than 1,000 marimba players from South Africa and around the world will gather in Cape Town on 15 and 16 August for the first Marimba World Championships. More than 100 groups will take part at St Cyprian’s School, celebrating music and bringing players of different ages and backgrounds together.Preliminary rounds will take place throughout the weekend before the Finale Showcase on Sunday evening. Fifteen top bands will perform, with four going head-to-head for the title of world champion.

R6 Million Boost for Eastern Cape Learners
Mercedes Benz South Africa has invested R6 million to expand the Promaths Programme in the Eastern Cape, helping more learners improve their Mathematics and Physical Science results. The initiative will support selected Grade 10 and 11 learners from 18 schools in Buffalo City through extra tuition, career guidance, teacher development and exposure to science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers.The programme aims to equip more young people with the skills needed for future study and jobs in high demand.

Gqeberha Artist Earns Global Recognition
Gqeberha artist Farook Mohammed has received international recognition after his artwork Makoti Painting was nominated for the Global Arts Prize for Innovation from more than 10,000 entries worldwide.The artwork celebrates the strength and diversity of African women while raising awareness about gender-based violence and promoting unity. Mohammed uses his art to tell African stories and highlight social issues affecting communities. Mohammed says his work aims to create conversations and use creativity to bring people together:
