Johannesburg Water and Wits University are launching a new borehole system to provide water to informal settlements in the city.
The pilot project has identified 9-informal areas that will benefit from the initiative, including parts of Region-G such as Lenasia and Soweto.
The utility says the joint effort is in response to recurrent water issues experienced by communities across Johannesburg.

US rapper Gunna will headline Milk and Cookies Festival in Cape Town and Joburg.
The multi-platinum hip-hop sensation will perform at Kenilworth Racecourse in Cape Town on 2 January 2026 with South African DJ Virgo Deep.
DJ Kent will join Gunna at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg on 10 January 2026.
The festival will also include the Milk and Cookies Music Week which includes educational workshops and panels for aspiring music writers and producers.
