Organisers behind the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Soweto uprising have launched a nationwide campaign focused on youth activism, civic participation and preserving the legacy of the student revolt.
The “1976@50” programme was unveiled at the Hector Pieterson Memorial in Orlando West and will include concerts, youth dialogues, academic forums and heritage projects leading up to Youth Day next year.
The campaign also plans to create a permanent digital archive of the uprising and introduce initiatives focused on youth employment, civic education and voter participation.

Plett NSRI boosts rescue fleet with three new vessels

NSRI Station 14 in Plettenberg Bay has added three new rescue vessels to its operational fleet following a blessing ceremony.
The boats, including two jet RIBs and a smaller craft, are designed to improve response times during coastal emergencies.
The NSRI relies on volunteers and operates across South Africa’s coastline and inland waters, responding to dozens of rescues each year.
The organisation says the vessels were made possible through donations and sponsorships.
