River clean up project gives people a second chance

A Johannesburg non profit organisation is changing lives by creating jobs through river clean up projects while helping keep local waterways clean.
Ububele Africa was founded during the Covid 19 pandemic after offering food parcels to people experiencing homelessness in exchange for cleaning litter from local rivers.
Six years later, the initiative has grown to employ 13 people, who each earn R300 a day clearing waste from rivers.
The programme has also helped participants overcome challenges such as homelessness and addiction while rebuilding their lives.
