Career expo to help young people plan their futures

The Lighthouse Community Centre in Springs will host its third annual career expo from 9 to 11 July, giving young people the opportunity to explore study and career options.
The three day event will include CV writing workshops, mock interviews, career guidance, keynote talks from professionals and exhibitions by higher education institutions and companies.
The final day will also be open to the wider community, giving more people access to career advice and employment information.

UKZN develops smart device to help elderly manage diabetes

The University of KwaZulu Natal has introduced a smart diabetes device at Umdoni Retirement Village to help older residents manage their insulin more effectively.
The first rollout included 10 donated devices that provide visual and sound reminders to reduce missed or incorrect doses.
Developed by engineering students and staff, the low cost technology was designed to support greater independence for older people and could be expanded to benefit more communities in future.

Sign language pioneer continues to build a more inclusive South Africa

Eastern Cape interpreter Asanda Katshwa is continuing her mission to strengthen South African Sign Language interpreting and improve access for the country's Deaf community.
Katshwa made history in 2003 as South Africa's first female and first black interpreter to be accredited by the South African Translators' Institute.
She has since mentored many of the country's leading interpreters and is now returning to a more public role to encourage professional accreditation and support the next generation.
She is also completing a Master's degree focused on making South Africa's justice system more accessible to Deaf people.
