The Muti-Space Foundation hosted a Youth Month event at Alexandra Museum on June 28, sponsored by the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), aimed at empowering young people to participate in the economy.
Event director Kenny Hlaise highlighted the challenges youth face, including over 60% unemployment for ages 15 to 24.
Hlaise urged youth to start businesses and use available NYDA support, while the event offered vital information on business registration and funding to informal traders.
Growing up in Alexandra himself, Hlaise said youth empowerment is a community responsibility and pledged to keep bringing such opportunities to the township.

South Africa has signed a major skills development agreement with Austria, aiming to strengthen vocational training and boost youth employability.
Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane sealed the deal during the Austrian president’s state visit, aligning South Africa’s TVET system with Austria’s world-renowned dual education model.
The partnership will allow local students access to Austrian companies, support curriculum development, and promote practical, work-based learning.
Nkabane says the collaboration is key to preparing young people for scarce-skills jobs in sectors like green tech and engineering — and making sure no community is left behind.

The University of the Witwatersrand is helping change how learners understand human evolution through hands-on workshops at its Evolutionary Studies Institute.
Nearly 700 Grade 12 learners in Gauteng took part, with test scores rising from 39% to 61%, and acceptance of evolution also improving.
Using fossil casts, skull comparisons and problem-solving tasks, learners engaged deeply with the topic – and teachers say the interactive approach brought science to life.
Wits researchers believe similar workshops, even held at schools, can spark lasting curiosity and counter misconceptions with evidence-based learning.
