Wits Workshops Boost Learners' Understanding of Human Evolution
Story 1
The University of the Witwatersrand is helping change how learners understand human evolution through hands-on workshops at its Evolutionary Studies Institute.
Nearly 700 Grade 12 learners in Gauteng took part, with test scores rising from 39% to 61%, and acceptance of evolution also improving.
Using fossil casts, skull comparisons and problem-solving tasks, learners engaged deeply with the topic – and teachers say the interactive approach brought science to life.
Wits researchers believe similar workshops, even held at schools, can spark lasting curiosity and counter misconceptions with evidence-based learning.

Backed by research showing that sound boosts brand power and ad recall, the tracks are part of Mastercard’s push to blend culture, creativity and commerce across the continent

Gqeberha Pensioners Get Moving and Growing Together
Story 3
In Gqeberha, an 84-year-old retired teacher is helping older men stay strong, mobile and connected — one Monday at a time.
Johan Calitz leads a weekly fitness group at the Stella Londt Retirement Village, where men aged 66 to 94 gather under a tree for tai chi, balance training and motivational “one-legged talks.
What started as a small initiative has grown into a wellness routine with big results — from better mobility to fewer walking sticks and more smiles.
Even the nursing staff say they’ve never seen the men looking this healthy or happy.
Calitz, who lost his wife two years ago, says the group has brought him purpose and friendship.
And with each rubber band lap and push-up, these golden oldies are proving that growing older can mean growing stronger too.
