Kayak Penguin Rescue
Story 3
A routine paddle off the Cape coast turned into a remarkable wildlife rescue when a young African penguin climbed onto a kayaker’s vessel and into her arms. Kirshia Govender of the International Ocean Institute said the penguin’s unusual behaviour immediately signalled distress. The bird allowed Govender to cradle it before settling on her kayak. She later noticed the penguin was injured and in pain, prompting the group to paddle back to shore to seek help from SANCCOB. SANCCOB responded quickly and transferred the penguin to its rehabilitation facility for immediate care.
