City Power extends its free Basic Electricity registration campaign

City Power has announced the extension of its Free Basic Electricity registration campaign, following a strong public response.

The Power utility says it has successfully registered 10 000 customers, since the launch of the free basic electricity campaign in June.

Residents who have been successfully registered will receive free 50 kWh of electricity each month and will also be exempt from City Power’s R200 surcharge, which consists of a R70 service fee and a R130 network capacity charge.

Spokesperson Isaac Mangena announced the extension to the 31st of December to allow more qualifying residents to benefit from the programme.

Qualifying residents include pensioners, the unemployed, and those earning below R7 503.00.

Operation Smile SA and Mpumalanga Health Department perform 25 free cleft surgeries

The nonprofit medical service organization Operation Smile South Africa, in partnership with the Mpumalanga Health Department, returned to the Rob Ferreira Hospital, to perform 25 free cleft lip and palate surgeries.

Since its establishment in South Africa in 2006, the organization has developed a robust network of more than 150 dedicated volunteers, including cleft surgeons, nurses, pediatricians, dentists, and speech therapists.

The skilled professionals have travelled throughout South Africa and across Sub-Saharan Africa, performing thousands of life-changing surgeries.

A key priority for Operation Smile South Africa is capacity building, with a strong emphasis on mentoring and training local healthcare workers during and beyond each surgical mission.

Eight rising South African influencers have graduated from the Dentsu School of Influence, joining their counterparts from Kenya and Spain in the international programme.

Now in its second year, the six-month intensive programme, builds the knowledge and skills of social media creators in order to develop successful and sustainable enterprises in the booming influencer marketing industry.

The programme, which uniquely enables emerging creators to engage closely with, and learn from leading marketing experts, creatives and mentors is aimed at empowering them to take their content careers to the next level.

The curriculum includes the basics of financial management, the industry’s ethical guidelines, personal development and executive functioning.

Technology giant Google has announced R670 million in cumulative funding to support artificial intelligence development across Africa, along with the launch of a new AI Community Centre in Accra, Ghana.

The multinational corporation is also backing the development of AI tools in over 40 African languages through R54million in funding for the Masakhane Research Foundation.

Additional funding will support education-focused programmes across Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa, as well as a catalytic initiative aimed at helping over 100 AI-driven startups.

The company says the move builds on its broader efforts to support Africa’s growing AI talent base and to ensure technologies are developed with local context and global relevance.
