The country’s first blind soccer league in Johannesburg brings together visually impaired players to compete and grow the sport.
Founded less than a year ago by Mlungisi Msibi, the league meets monthly at Paterson Park Multipurpose Centre and currently features four teams from across Gauteng.
The game is played with four visually impaired players and one sighted goalkeeper per team, with blackout goggles worn to level the playing field.
Organisers are focused on preparing players for international competitions, including the upcoming Blind Football African Championship in Uganda.
The league continues to expand and seeks further support to increase opportunities for visually impaired athletes.

WhatsApp Steps Up Fight Against Messaging Scams with New Tools and Account Bans

WhatsApp has ramped up efforts to protect users from messaging scams by banning millions of accounts linked to criminal scam centres worldwide.
In the first half of 2025, the platform deactivated over 6.8 million accounts before scammers could carry out their schemes.
The scams often involve multi-platform tactics, including cryptocurrency investments and pyramid schemes, starting on dating apps or texts before moving to WhatsApp and other messaging apps.
WhatsApp is also introducing new in-app safety features and working closely with partners like Meta and OpenAI to dismantle sophisticated scam networks.
Kojo Boakye, Meta’s Vice President for Public Policy in Africa, the Middle East and Türkiye, said the company combines technology, detection, and user education to keep the messaging environment safe.

A Johannesburg man has defied expectations by graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce in Accountancy from the University of Johannesburg at the age of 90.
Caspar Greeff first studied actuarial science in the 1960s using slide rules but recently adapted to modern technology to complete his degree through UJ’s online programme.
With help from university lecturers and his daughter, he learned to use laptops and submit exams online.
Despite his age, Mr Greeff maintains an active lifestyle, regularly participating in park runs and visiting the gym.
University officials say his achievement highlights the importance of lifelong learning and making education accessible to all.
Mr Greeff hopes his story will inspire others to keep learning and pursuing their goals, no matter their age
