Joburg Launches First Digital Heritage Register

Johannesburg has launched its first digital heritage register, documenting 90 historic sites across the city.
Many of these locations were previously unknown to the public.
The project was driven in part by Soweto-born heritage expert Kopano Monaheng, who has helped restore landmarks such as the Eyethu Cinema and secure recognition for culturally significant spaces like Kwa Mai Mai Market.
The register, developed by the City in partnership with historians and tour guides, aims to safeguard Johannesburg’s cultural legacy and ensure its stories are preserved for future generations.

The project has helped upgrade over 240 taverns nationwide, boosting local economies and building stronger communities.
