Nineteen University of Pretoria students have spent nearly two years conserving 239 historic Southern African artefacts, now on display at the Javett Arts Centre in Pretoria.
The exhibition, Orchard of the Imagination, features beadwork, jewellery, carved wooden items and other objects reflecting the daily lives, beliefs and creativity of past communities.
Part of UP’s Heritage Conservation Master’s programme, the project gave students hands-on experience in preserving material culture.
Visitors can explore the restored collection until February next year, connecting with South Africa’s shared history and cultural identity.
