Miss South Africa Qhawekazi Mazaleni brought reading to life for children in Alexandra, helping launch National Book Week at the Third Avenue Children’s Library.
She read the South African story Yes Yanga with the children before they took part in a game of cricket based on the story.
The visit aimed to make reading more engaging and meaningful, while encouraging children to develop a love for books and storytelling.

Coding initiative reaches African learners

A South African coding initiative has reached more than 50-thousand learners across 10 African countries, showing that children can learn coding even without access to computer labs.
Tangible Africa’s Coding 4 Africa programme used teacher led activities to teach learners problem solving, sequencing and computational thinking using resources already available in their classrooms.
The initiative reached 513 schools and organisations, with teachers helping take the programme into their own schools and communities.

Young netball champions crowned

Die Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool Pretoria and Idlangamabela Secondary School from Mpumalanga have won the 2026 Kay Motsepe Schools Championship Under 15 Netball National Finals in Pretoria.
AHMP beat Helpmekaar College 17 to 16, while Idlangamabela defeated Jabulile Secondary School 17 to 15.
The competition aims to develop young netball talent and create opportunities for learners from both established and developing schools.
The finals brought together 36 schools from all nine provinces, with the winning schools receiving 400-thousand rand each towards legacy projects.
The AHMP captain says it was an honour to participate in the competition.
