Gauteng Expands Eye Care Services In Tshwane

The Gauteng Department of Health will launch a new retinopathy screening service at Tshwane District Hospital on 9 October.
The technology will help healthcare professionals detect early signs of diabetic retinopathy and manage related eye complications.
The department says more than 17 000 patients received spectacles through public health facilities between April and August, including more than 2 800 children.
More than 4 500 cataract surgeries were also performed during the same period, with 14 hospitals now offering the service.

Zanele Muholi Wins Prestigious Hasselblad Photography Award

South African photographer and visual activist Zanele Muholi has been named the 2026 recipient of the Hasselblad Award, one of the world’s leading photography prizes.
The award recognises Muholi’s work documenting and celebrating Black LGBTQIA+ communities through portraiture and visual activism.
The prize comes with two million Swedish kronor, worth about three-point-three million rand, as well as a gold medal and a Hasselblad camera.

Katlehong Event Promotes Albinism Awareness And Acceptance

The City of Ekurhuleni Women’s Directorate and the Kasie Albinism Foundation hosted an albinism awareness event in Katlehong on September 26.
The event brought community members and people living with albinism together at Emzwinkini Park under the theme “Proudly in My Skin”.
The programme focused on self-acceptance, education and correcting myths and misconceptions about albinism.
Organisers also promoted equal opportunities and stronger support networks for people living with albinism and their families.
