South Africa secures commitments from China and India
Story 3
South Africa has secured investments from Chinese and Indian car companies to upgrade to full-scale manufacturing.
The move responds to industry calls for more local production amid challenges facing the sector, including declining production volumes, stiff competition from China, and the shift to electric vehicles.
Trade Minister Parks Tau made the announcement last Thursday, after recent engagements with industry players in China and India.
The commitments involve assembling cars from parts delivered to the site, rather than just finishing partially assembled kits.
The development is expected to boost the country's automotive industry.
