Jacarandas Paint Pretoria and Johannesburg Purple
Story 1
Pretoria is awash in purple as tens of thousands of jacaranda trees burst into flower across the city.
Known as Jacaranda City, Pretoria’s iconic bloom draws tourists from around the world, while Johannesburg also showcases many of these striking trees.
Originally imported from Brazil over a century ago, the trees have become symbols of both cities and key attractions for visitors.
The University of Pretoria is home to more than 200 jacaranda specimens, with careful replanting during urban development helping preserve the city’s signature streetscapes.
Jacarandas provide shade, beautify urban areas, and support tourism, while fostering a sense of community and pride in Pretoria’s botanical heritage.
