Global Deforestation Rate Shows Encouraging Decline
Story 3
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization reports that deforestation has slowed in every region over the past decade, a trend described as “hopeful.”
More than half of the world’s forests are now under long-term management plans, while one fifth are in legally protected areas.
Global forest loss fell to 10.9 million hectares per year over the last decade, down from 13.6 million hectares in the previous ten years.
Forests still cover around one-third of the planet’s land, totaling 4.14 billion hectares.
While the slowdown is positive, the FAO warns that continued efforts are needed to protect the world’s remaining forests.
