Centurion teen walks again after groundbreaking cancer surgery first for South Africa
Story 1
A 15 year old boy from Centurion is recovering well after undergoing a pioneering bone cancer operation at Netcare Unitas Hospital that allowed him to keep his leg.
The teenager had been facing amputation due to an aggressive form of bone cancer, but surgeons instead used a liquid nitrogen technique to remove and treat the tumour while preserving his own bone.
Doctors say the procedure could allow the bone to grow and integrate naturally as he continues to develop.
Medical staff say he was already taking assisted steps just one day after surgery, marking a remarkable early recovery and a major milestone in local orthopaedic care.
