A group of South African public servants is currently in China for a 20-day learning exchange programme hosted by the Academy for International Business Officials.
Organised by the National School of Government, the initiative aims to equip officials with knowledge on how China modernised its state and eliminated absolute poverty.
Public Service Minister Mzamo Buthelezi says such programmes are key to strengthening public institutions and driving sustainable transformation in South Africa. The exchange runs until 27 May.

South Africans to Honour WWII Heroes in Moving VE Day Memorial Service

As South Africa marks 80 years since Victory in Europe Day, a solemn non-denominational memorial service will be held on 10 May at 11 a.m. at the Castle of Good Hope.
The event will serve as the emotional close to a three-day exhibition honouring the country’s unsung World War II heroes.
Open to the public, the service will offer a moment for reflection and remembrance, honouring both the fallen and the survivors of the war. Former Cape Town Deputy Mayor Ian Neilson will deliver the keynote address, while the South African College High School brass ensemble will perform the Last Post—offering a poignant musical tribute to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
The ceremony will provide South Africans with a meaningful opportunity to pay their respects and acknowledge the resilience and bravery of those who served under challenging circumstances.

Health Boost for Ex-Miners in Gauteng

The Gauteng Health Department has launched a medical assessment programme aimed at supporting former mine workers in the West Rand.
In partnership with the Medical Bureau for Occupational Diseases, the initiative helps trace ex-miners who may qualify for medical care and social security benefits due to work-related illnesses.
The pilot phase kicked off at Carletonville Hospital, with plans to expand across all Gauteng districts.
Project leader Siyabonga Jikwana says the service will continue beyond the pilot, ensuring long-term support for affected workers.
