Wits University unveils Hydrogen pilot facility
Story 1
Deputy President Paul Mashatile has officially launched the R100 million Wits University pilot hydrogen plant in Johannesburg, that will serve as a hydrogen production, teaching, research and testing facility.
Mashatile says the pilot facility could be a game changer for the country’s industrial future.
The plant will use water and solar energy to produce hydrogen through the process of electrolysis and will produce about 2.2 kilogrammes of hydrogen per hour at full operation, storing up to 200 kilogrammes of hydrogen on site.
The hydrogen can be used for campus energy needs, campus transport projects such as hydrogen-powered vehicles, and for testing by industry partners. The plant is expected to be fully operational in 2028.
