Strong Uptake of New HIV Prevention Injection
Story 3
The Department of Health says more than 16 000 people have received Lenacapavir since the rollout of the groundbreaking HIV prevention injection began in June.
The long acting medicine is given just twice a year and is designed to prevent HIV infection before exposure. South Africa launched the rollout after receiving an initial shipment of nearly 38 000 doses, with priority groups including young women, sex workers and other people at higher risk of HIV.
Health Minister Aaron Motsoeledi officials say the strong early uptake shows communities are embracing the new prevention option as the country works to reduce new HIV infections by 2030
