Mpumalanga learner earns global recognition for water innovation

Seventeen year old Sinenhlanhla Sikhulile Nkosi from Mbombela has won the 2026 South African Youth Water Prize with an invention designed to make drinking water safer.
The Grade 11 learner developed The Sentinel Barrier, a special coating for plastic bottles that helps prevent microplastics and harmful chemicals from contaminating drinking water before they form.
Nkosi will represent South Africa at the Stockholm Junior Water Prize in Sweden later this month, where he will compete against young innovators from more than 30 countries.
