Historic Lunar Flyby
Teaser / Tailpiece story
Astronauts aboard the Artemis II mission have made a groundbreaking lunar flyby yesterday, during which they surveyed the Moon. This includes the rarely seen far side that always faces away from Earth. The crew, made up of Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch of NASA, and Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency, observed parts of the lunar surface never before seen by human eyes. The astronauts have already experienced what mission control call “moon joy.” Using a powerful 400mm camera lens from over two-thirds of the way there, they’ve been able to identify detailed features such as craters and terrain — including the massive Orientale Basin, a 600-mile-wide formation marking a transition between the Moon’s near and far sides.
