Penguins Get Healing Vests
Teaser / Tailpiece story
Researchers in Chile are testing an unusual new treatment to help injured Humboldt penguins recover from skin wounds: snug red vests woven with copper and zinc fibres.
The technology has already been used successfully to help injured dogs and cats heal, and veterinarians are now adapting it for penguins. At Buin Zoo near Santiago, researchers carefully measured the birds to create specially designed bodysuits that fit them comfortably. Humboldt penguins are considered a vulnerable species, and Chile is home to the world's largest concentration of these birds. Researchers hope the innovative vests will speed up healing and give injured penguins a better chance of returning to the wild.
