50 Years of Changing Lives
The Children's Communication Centre in Houghton Estate is celebrating 50 years of helping children and families communicate, connect and thrive.Founded in the 1970s, the centre provides specialised support to generations of children with speech, language and hearing impairments. Its services include assistive technology such as hearing aids and cochlear implants. Over five decades, its multidisciplinary team of speech therapists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and music therapists has worked together to help children communicate, participate more fully and reach their potential.

The 21st SA National Parks Week will take place from the 7th to the 13th of September, giving South African citizens and residents free day access to participating national parks across the country. The initiative, which is led by the South African National Parks, aims to encourage people to experience South Africa's natural heritage while promoting appreciation for conservation and the country's protected areas. Visitors will need to present a valid South African identity document to qualify for free entry, while children under the age of 18 will not be required to provide identification.

Community Paints Delta Park Fence
Victory Park residents joined forces with CAP Security last week to give a 1km-long fence bordering Delta Park a fresh coat of paint. Hosted by CAP Security Victory Park, the project followed months of preparation, including repairing damaged gates, sanding and wire-brushing the fence, and treating rust along the structure. The community worked alongside CAP's green team and other staff to transform the fence and improve the area around the park. CAP has also supported other projects in the area, including maintaining surrounding spaces, installing solar lights and repairing infrastructure.

Unusual Science Celebrated
Ten research teams have been honoured at the Ig Nobel Prizes, a light-hearted awards ceremony that celebrates scientific discoveries that are unusual, surprising and imaginative.
This year's ceremony was held in Zurich, Switzerland, marking the first time the event has taken place outside the United States after 35 years. Among the winners were researchers who reconstructed the evolutionary history of kissing, investigated the science of blowing your nose and studied the unusual properties of cockroach milk.One team even buried 1,000 pairs of underwear in more than 25 countries to discover how creatures in the soil help fabric break down. The winners received quirky trophies shaped like a cross between a mushroom and a human foot.
The awards show that science can be creative, curious and fun — encouraging researchers to explore even the strangest questions and reminding us that unexpected ideas can lead to fascinating discoveries.
