Gene therapy slows progression of Huntington’s disease
Story 3
A new gene therapy, AMT-130, has shown promising results in slowing Huntington’s disease, a condition causing motor loss, dementia, and death. In a 36-month trial, patients receiving a high dose experienced 75% less disease progression than those untreated.
The therapy, developed by uniQure and tested at University College London, reduces production of the faulty huntingtin protein and lowers markers of neuronal damage. It is generally well-tolerated and could be a one-time treatment lasting a lifetime.
UniQure plans to seek regulatory approval in the US, UK, and Europe, bringing hope to thousands of people living with Huntington’s.
