Canada and US unite to protect the Great Lakes
Story 3
Canada and the United States are joining forces to protect the Great Lakes from invasive carp.
These fast-growing fish, introduced in the 1970s, can eat up to 40 percent of their bodyweight each day, threatening the delicate balance of the freshwater system.
Canadian scientists are monitoring rivers like the Grand River using electrofishing to detect and safely remove any carp. Since 2012, only a few dozen invasive fish have been found, showing that early efforts are making a difference.
The partnership is seen as a model for cross-border conservation, proving that joint action and vigilance can protect one of the world’s most important freshwater ecosystems.
