US skateboarder rolls into Fourways on mission to build Uganda skatepark

Los Angeles skateboarder Jason Vanporppal has arrived in Fourways as part of a cross continental journey across Africa to raise funds for a skatepark project in Uganda.
He is being hosted by Idle Auto Expo through its NPO Blessing Lives, as he continues his mission to build a permanent facility for young skaters.
Vanporppal has previously completed fundraising skate journeys in the United States and Japan, donating skateboards and supporting youth programmes along the way.
He says the aim is to create opportunity and inspire the next generation through sport and safe skating spaces.

New school library brings reading space to Cape Town learners

The Otto Foundation and the Rotary Club of Newlands have broken ground on a new library at Dryden Street Primary School, marking the start of a wider plan to develop school libraries in the Woodstock and Salt River communities.
The school currently has no library or dedicated reading space, and the new facility will provide books in multiple languages along with a full time librarian and structured reading programmes.
The project is also being supported through a crowdfunding drive aimed at stocking the library with age appropriate books for learners.

New play explores the life of Albie Sachs in Sandton
Story 3
A new stage production about the life of former Constitutional Court judge Albie Sachs is set to open at Theatre on the Square.
Albie Sachs Fathers Sons and Soft Vengeance, written by Gail Louw, runs from the 6th to the 24th of May and reflects on Sachs’ life as an anti apartheid activist, lawyer and Constitutional Court judge who helped shape South Africa’s democracy.
Director Fiona Ramsay says the production captures Sachs’ own words and the way he expresses himself.
The play is performed by Graham Hopkins in a one person performance.

The Franschhoek Literary Festival returns from the 15th to the 17th of May, bringing a weekend of storytelling, discussion and cultural experiences to the winelands.
This year’s programme features a range of sessions including literature, food, photography and family focused events, alongside a fundraising concert supporting school reading initiatives in the Franschhoek Valley.
Organisers say the festival aims to promote a love of reading and create a platform for ideas, with activities designed for both adults and younger audiences.
