Microbes used to mine metals from space rocks
Teaser / Tailpiece story
Scientists on the International Space Station have used tiny microbes to pull valuable metals like platinum and palladium from meteorites.
NASA astronaut Michael Scott Hopkins tested the method on space rocks and found that microgravity helped the fungus work even better.
Teams from Cornell and Edinburgh universities confirmed that microbes can recover metals more efficiently than chemical solutions.
This approach could help future space missions get the materials they need without bringing them from Earth.
