Gauteng Launches Pilot for New High-Tech Number Plates to Combat Crime
Story 3
Gauteng has unveiled its new high-tech number plate system, with a pilot programme officially underway on government vehicles.
The plates feature embedded QR codes, track and trace capabilities, and tamper-evident security decals to help reduce vehicle-related crime, including the use of counterfeit and cloned plates.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi highlighted that up to 85% of crimes in the province involve vehicles, underscoring the need for an overhaul of the current car registration system.
The pilot will run for six months with government fleet vehicles before the broader public rollout.
Motorists are not yet required to upgrade, but will eventually need to re-register and obtain the new plates when renewing their licence discs.
