The University of KwaZulu-Natal has made history as the first university in South Africa,
to provide visually impaired students with cutting-edge Envision Smart AI Glasses.
The device uses artificial intelligence to help users navigate the world with more independence and confidence.
The five recipients, were selected through a process led by the University’s Disability Support Unit.
Built on the Google Glass platform, the Glasses make use of a high-definition camera to capture visual information, converting it into audio feedback.

The City’s Film Permits Office says film productin crews have booked more than 59 000 beds in Cape Town, spending nearly R148 million from November 2023 to June 2024.
The productions are driving consistent demand for accommodation, food services, transport and office space, creating real economic value for local businesses.
The Permits Office says a total of 550 production shoots took place in the Cape Town CBD from the 1st of January to the 26th of May 2025, including commercials, documentaries and feature films.
