Gauteng's new smart number plate unveiled

The Gauteng Provincial Government unveiled the new “smart” number plates during a pilot launch event at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Soweto yesterday.

The plates will be tested over a six month period government-owned vehicles, that are operated by G-Fleet Management, prior to a province wide roll-out.

The plates feature forensic QR codes and a digitised back-end portal to improve traceability and reduce fraud, while preventing plate swoping and cloning.

The technology aims to curb vehicle theft, while supporting traffic law enforcement.

UKZN introduces Envision smart AI Glasses for visually impaired students

UKZN has become the first university in the country to provide Envision Smart AI Glasses to five visually impaired students.

The initiative was made possible through the efforts of the UKZN Foundation, which approached assistive technology provider Sensory Solutions, for the donation to the University’s Disability Support Unit.

Each pair of glasses comes with lifetime software updates and technical support at a cost of around R75 000 each.

SA's Sibusiso Vilane summits mount Everest

The man who made history as the first Black African to summit Mount Everest in 2003, has reached the world's tallest peak.
Sibusiso Vilane, a trainee game ranger from Mpumalanga, planted the South African flag on Mount Everest on Monday morning, after reaching the summit at 5.30am South African time.

The ranger was was part of an eight-member international Jagged Globe Team,
that summited the world's highest peak.

Vilane says he had been encouraged to conquer Everest by a member of the British High Commission, while he working in Swaziland.
