Joburg Theatre hounours legendary playwright Mbongeni Ngema

The Joburg Theatre is staging the inaugural Mbongeni Ngema Festival, in honour of the renowned South African playwright.

The festival opened on the 1st of June, with the unveiling of Ngema's star on the theatre's Diamond Walk of fame.

Artistic Director at Joburg City Theatres James Ngcobo, says Ngema was not just a playwright and composer, but also a cultural warrior whose work gave voice to the voiceless and told stories with fearless honesty and immense beauty.

The Director says the staging of the play is a bold cultural statement, considering the city's plans to host the G20 Summit later this year.

Participation in rugby by girls at school level in South Africa has increased significantly.

South Africa is among the few countries globally where rugby participation continues to grow, with over 103,000 male and female players currently registered.

The Get Into Rugby programme now accounts for 50% of primary school participants and 80% of all girls in the system.

The City of Cape Town’s global appeal as a film destination, is driving significant economic increase in the city’s hospitality industry.

The City’s Film Permits Office says film crews booked more than 59 000 beds in Cape Town, spending nearly R148 million from November 2023 to June 2024.

The productions are driving consistent demand for accommodation, food services, transport and office space, creating real economic value for local businesses.

The Permits Office says a total of 550 production shoots took place in the Cape Town CBD from the 1st of January to the 26th of May 2025, including commercials, documentaries and feature films.
