The 9Miles Project is a South African non-profit using surfing as a catalyst to provide holistic support, mentorship, and life skills to at-risk youth in coastal communities. The organization addresses issues like poverty, lack of education, and substance abuse by offering safe spaces, after-school programs, literacy support, and job creation to build brighter futures..Founded in 2013, the 9Miles Project set out to introduce children from informal coastal areas to surfing. One of the organisation’s most impactful initiatives is the 100Wave Challenge, a community-driven fundraising surf event which raised over 176,000 rand.

South Africans have been voted as the most generous people in the world. This is according to a new study by U.S.-based financial services company Remitly. The study surveyed 4,500 participants across 25 countries, assessing behaviours such as empathy, emotional support, patience, kindness, and a willingness to put others first.
