ELF-SA leads clean-up at Shirinda Primary to protect learners

The Economic Liberators Forum South Africa (ELF-SA) led a clean-up campaign at Shirinda Primary School in Mamelodi, clearing overgrown grass, bushes, and trees to create a safer and healthier environment for learners.
The organisation plans to help upgrade the school toilets, assist other schools in the area, and expand similar community initiatives.
Volunteers, many of whom are former learners or parents, aim to improve safety, encourage community pride, and tackle overgrowth issues at other local sites, including Mamelodi West cemetery.

Robin Hood Foundation supports 70 new moms at Durban hospital

Volunteers from The Robin Hood Foundation visited Victoria Mxenge Hospital in Durban, giving 70 new mothers bundles of baby essentials through their Love the Babies project.
The gift bags included knitted items, blankets and other essentials, bringing comfort and practical support to mothers during the first weeks of their babies’ lives. Volunteers also spent time talking with the moms, including one who had been living in the hospital with her premature baby since November.
The foundation plans to continue supporting new mothers across the country and is seeking donations of pre-loved baby clothes and items to keep the project going.

UJ all-women team wins international award for innovative breast pump

An all-female team of honours students from the University of Johannesburg has won the top prize at the AAKRUTI Global Design Competition for creating Latch, a pedal-powered breast pump designed for mothers in rural and low-resource communities.
Latch allows women to express breast milk without electricity, works with any standard bottle or reusable container, and reduces plastic waste. The design aims to make breastfeeding easier, affordable, and environmentally conscious.
Two team members presented the concept in Texas, impressing international judges and securing first place.
