Legacy Donation Brings New Computer Lab to Hillwood Primary
Story 2
Hillwood Primary School in Lavender Hill has opened a new computer lab, funded by over R200,000 in donations made in memory of the late Murray Carlyle. The ‘Murray for Mountains’ campaign, inspired by Carlyle’s generosity, has provided 36 computers, interactive whiteboards, and staff support, tripling the school’s computer accessibility.
Speaking at the opening, Carlyle’s brother, Rob, said seeing the pupils’ faces made the loss “worthwhile,” while teachers welcomed the lab as a space that opens doors to knowledge, confidence, and opportunity for learners from all backgrounds.
Principal Gavin Alkana said the lab transforms learning, ensuring every pupil now has a workspace, creating what he called an “oasis of opportunity” in Lavender Hill.

Pimville learners celebrate World Read Aloud Day with literacy drive
Story 3
Pimville learners marked World Read Aloud Day with a special literacy celebration at Khandubuhle Primary School.
The Nhlanhla Tshabalala Foundation partnered with the City of Joburg’s Pimville Library, Nal’ibali and local author Desire Mogosoane to host a read-aloud event aimed at building confidence, improving literacy and encouraging a love for books.
Learners read aloud in both their home languages and English, while library officials reminded children that books can be borrowed for free.
Acting principal Zandile Khulu says the school’s daily “drop and read” sessions are already improving reading skills, and events like this help learners feel comfortable reading in front of others.

13-Year-Old Hero Saves Family After Being Swept Out to Sea
Teaser / Tailpiece story
A 13-year-old boy in Western Australia is being hailed a hero after swimming for about four hours to save his mother and two younger siblings.
The family was swept out to sea at Quindalup in Geographe Bay when strong winds pushed their kayak and paddleboards offshore.
The boy, Austin Appelbee, swam several kilometres through rough, cold waters before reaching shore and running two kilometres to get a phone and call emergency services. A helicopter later rescued his mother, 47-year-old Joanne Appelbee, and his siblings, 12-year-old Beau and 8-year-old Grace, who were clinging to paddleboards about 14 kilometres from shore.
Officials described Austin’s courage as “superhuman,” saying his endurance and quick thinking were critical to the successful rescue.
