STEM mentoring programme empowers future women scientists

Young women from across Gauteng have been welcomed into the latest UJ Wits STEM MentHER programme, which encourages female learners to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The initiative pairs Grade 11 learners with women academics and industry professionals who provide mentorship, career guidance and support to help them succeed in STEM fields.
The programme aims to equip more young women with the confidence and skills to pursue leadership roles in sectors where women remain underrepresented.

New district hospital improves healthcare access

Residents of Ekangala and surrounding communities will now have improved access to healthcare with the opening of the new 220 bed King Nyabela Hospital in Mpumalanga.
Named after King Nyabela, a respected leader of the Ndzundza Ndebele people, the Level One district hospital offers services including surgery, internal medicine, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, as well as high care.
The new facility is expected to reduce travel times for patients and expand access to quality healthcare closer to home. Mpumalanga Health MEC Sasekani Manzini says it is also helping to restore the dignity of the community.

Fundraising journey to support orphaned elephants gets underway

Two Johannesburg adventurers are preparing for a unique fundraising challenge that will see them travel to HERD Elephant Orphanage using as many different forms of transport as possible on World Elephant Day.
Kyle Malyon and Lauren Lewis will make the journey by skateboard, Gautrain, motorcycle, bus and even a vintage Bentley to raise awareness and funds for South Africa's first dedicated elephant orphanage.
The pair have already raised R18 500 towards their R25 000 target, with donations set to help care for orphaned and vulnerable elephants at the HERD Trust.
